In 1896 this painting was bought for the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland as a work by Willem de Poorter (Duncan 1906, p. 15; Potterton/Mayes 1986, p. 127-129). In the collection catalogue of 1914 it was registered for the first time as a Rembrandt (Dublin 1914, p. 134). However, this attribution was not accepted by all art historians. In 1926 Collins Baker proposed an attribution to Gerard Dou (Collins Baker 1926, p. 42). Some art historians remained convinced of Rembrandt's authorship or at least believed that this could not be excluded, others disattributed the painting and considered it to be a work from the school of Rembrandt (see for instance: Benesch 1940, p. 6; Bauch 1960, p. 243-244; Potterton/Mayes 1986, p. 127-129). In 2001 the painting was exhibited as an autograph Rembrandt (Wetering e.a 2001, no. 62). Since then this painting has generally been accepted as a work by Rembrandt (see for instance: Madrid 2009, no. 17; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 5 (2011), p. 158-159; Ember et al. 2014, no. 84, p. 60-61).
