Utrecht 2004) symboliseren ze de vier elementen: aarde, lucht, vuur en water, hoewel hij ook aangeeft dat een andere symboliek als weergave van de vier seizoenen mogelijk is; Vergara (cat. tent. Wenen 2002) ziet in de vier werken vooral een onderliggende vanitas symboliek
