With the exception of Martin, this painting was regarded as an autograph Rembrandt by most art historians, until doubted by Gerson in 1969 (Martin 1921A, p. 30; Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 188). In 1990 Sumowski suggested an attribution to Flinck (Sumowski 1983-1994, vol. 5 (1990), p. 3098, no. 2078). Since 1992 this painting is generally regarded as a work from Rembrandt's studio (see for instance: Ingamells 1992, p. 15; Hedley/Duffy 2004, p. 350).
