The painting was long thought to have been painted by Rembrandt. However, it was not included in the monographs of Tümpel (1986) and Slatkes (1992). The attribution to Rembrandt was rejected on stylistic grounds by Keyes in 2004 (Keyes 2004, no. 74). In the sixth volume of the Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, Van de Wetering reattributed the paintingto Rembrandt and argued that the painting was possibly made in preparation for 'The evangelist Matthew and the angel' (RKD Images no. 58986)(Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, vol. 6 (2015), no. 288).
