This painting was always viewed as an autograph Rembrandt until doubted by Gerson in 1969. He stated: "it is not even a Dutch picture of the seventeenth century" (Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 231).

When considered a Rembrandt, the painting was dated c. 1650 (see for instance: Bauch 1966, no. 200). According to Potterton it is most likely to have been painted some time in the twenty or so years before its purchase by the National Gallery of Ireland in 1871 (Potterton/Mayes 1986, p. 129-131).
