Current attribution
follower of Rembrandt
Rejected attribution
possibly Gerbrand van den Eeckhout
attributed to Govert Flinck
In 1960 MacLaren rejected the traditional attribution to Rembrandt. He characterized the painting as clearly by a pupil or follower with a slight resemblance to the earliest work by Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (MacLaren 1960). This suggestion has been rejected by Sumowski (Sumowski 1983-1994). Bauch suggested an attribution to Govert Flinck (Bauch 1966), which was supported by Sumowski ((Sumowski 1983-1994). Both attributions have justfiably been rejected (Bomford 2006).
