After Flinck's death, Ovens 'worked up' the painting in September 1662 in four days to 'eene volcomene ordonnantie', for which he received 48 guilders (city account from 2 January 1663).

On 28 November 1659, Flinck received the commission to deliver 12 paintings for the gallery around the Citizen's Hall in the town hall of Amsterdam. In September 1662, after Flinck's death, Ovens "worked up" the Claudius painting in four days to "eene volcomene ordonnantie" (city account 2 January 1663).
