c. 1652 (1650 - 1654)
Ovens seems to be about thirty years. Sumowski 1983-1994, vol. 3 (1983), incorrectly believed the self-portrait came about in the early 1660s, based on a comparison with Ovens’ effigy in his 'Glorification' from 1661 (RKDimages no. 243484) (opinion Patrick Larsen, March 2019).
Created in
Schleswig-Holstein Probably painted after obtaining privileges from duke Frederick III of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf in 1652. Theoretically the self-portrait could have been executed in Amsterdam in circa 1650/51; there does, however, not seem to have been a special occasion which prompted the artist to portray himself during this period.
