This painting was always regarded as an autograph Rembrandt until rejected by Schwartz in 1984 (Schwartz 1984, p. 380). It was omitted by Tümpel from his catalogue of Rembrandt paintings of 1986. The RRP stated that this painting possibly "comes from Rembrandt's workshop", although they also believe it to be possible that it was made by someone from outside Rembrandt's circle, "though still in the 17th century" (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 3 (1989), no. C 100).
