follower of Rembrandt
or studio of Rembrandt
There is no consensus of opinion on the attribution of this painting for which many suggestions have been made. Schmidt Degener was the first to doubt the traditional attribution to Rembrandt and opted an attribution to Rembrandt's studio (Schmidt-Degener 1912B, p. 191). A confirmation of an origin in Rembrandt's workshop seems to be the qualification 'by a disciple of Reynbrant' in an inventory of 1672[see provenance]. Art historians have suggested attrbutions to Willem Drost, Barent Fabritius, Carel Fabritius, Karel van der Pluym, Simon de Vlieger, and Heyman Dullaert, while other remained convinced of Rembrandt's authorship (see for instance: Bredius 1929, p. 41; Valentiner 1932, p. 231; Pont 1958, p. 130, 151-154; Adams 1984, p. 430-433, 435-438; Van Dyke 1923, p. 175; De Witt/Van Sloten/Van der Veen 2015 p. 79; Wright 1976, p. 170). Since 2004 the Wallace collection lists this painting as by a follower of Rembrandt (see for instance: Hedley/Duffy 2004, p. 350-351; online collection catalogue, accessed 2017-08-02).
