Until the painting came to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the 1930s, it was described as made by Rembrandt (Londen 1793, no. 4; Buchanan 1824, p. 196; Berenson/Valentiner 1913-1914, no. 481). In a collection catalogue of 1941, the work was listed as an old copy after Rembrandt (Philadelphia 1941, no. 481). The painting is now considered to be a copy after the almost identical circle of Rembrandt painting in the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio (online collection catalogue, accessed 2017-07-10).
