Arent de Gelder
Ferdinand Bol
This painting was always viewed as an autograph Rembrandt, until doubted by Woldemar von Seidlitz in 1911 (Seidlitz 1911, p. 550-552). He suggested an attribution to Arent de Gelder. In 1912 Bode, Bredius, Hofstede de Groot and Veth all defended an attribution to Rembrandt (Bode e.a. 1912, p. 21-27). However, in 1935 Bredius omitted the painting from his catalogue of Rembrandt paintings. In the 1960s Rosenberg (Rosenberg 1964, no. 144) and Stechow (Stechow 1966. no. 277) eliminated the painting from the artist's accepted oeuvre. In 1989 the RRP attributed the painting to Rembrandt's pupil Ferdindand Bol (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 3 (1989), p. 49-50). Since 2014 this painting is generally accepted as an autograph painting by Rembrandt (see for instance: Wheelock, NGA Online Editions, accessed 2015-04-10; Corpus of Rembrandt paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 206).
