On connaît trois dessins de cette technique datant plutôt du début de la carrière de Cornelis Saftleven selon W. Schulz [1978]. Deux de ces dessins sont conservés à Amsterdam [Schulz nr. 208-209] et un autre à Berlin [Schulz nr. 282]. La technique du crayon huilé a été particulièrement utilisée par les artistes bolonais du XVIIe siècle comme Guerchin.'
