This painting was always considered as an autograph Rembrandt until doubted by Gerson in 1969 (Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 292). Since then the painting has generally been considered as a work by a follower of Rembrandt or studio of Rembrandt (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. IV (2005). p. 291; Foucart 2009, p. 219).
