  • inspired by
Pieter de Hooch, Triktrakspelers in een schuur
Vermeer repeated the positioning of the seated man and woman in reverse, the man's pose, the use of a male figure as seen from behind in the foreground as a repoussoir and the smiling woman (as observed by E. Schavemaker).

  • related to
The exact direction of influence is unclear (Jansen et al. 2019). According to Liedtke 2008, Vermeer relied on De Hooch and adopted the type of room with white plastered walls and the exact spot shown (corner near a window), the way the figures are positioned, the composition with the two seated figures and a figure facing the one seen on the back, especially the male figure seen on the back acting as a repoussoir and finally the lighting, including details such as the way the light touches the shoulder of the seated soldier.

  • used as model for
De Hooch repeated the subject of a couple seated at a table in the corner of a room with a window on the left. He adopted the positioning of the figures, with the man seen on the back, appearing as a dark silhouette and the woman on the other end of the table. He also repeated the motif of a drinking glass (as observed by A. Waiboer).

  • used as model for
De Man reversed the positioning of the two figures seated at a table and the pose of the man seen on his back in the foreground with his arm akimbo (Waiboer 2010, p. 55.

  • used as model for
Cornelis de Man, Kaartspelers in een interieur
De Man adopted the subject of an amorous couple seated at a table, the positioning of the figures with a figure seen on the back in the left foreground and the other figure on the other end of the table, the motif of a man with a broad-brimmed hat, elements of the color palette such as the red in the bodice of the woman in the foreground, aspects of the lighting such as the light that touches the shoulder of the figure in the foreground and the use of a large rectangular object in the background as a compositional contrast to the diagonal and oval shape of the hat (as observed by A. Waiboer).

  • used as model for
Brekelenkam adopted the type of the interior with plastered walls with the corner and windows to the left, the motif of a young woman, smiling, seated at a table and holding a glass of wine, the company of a man wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and elements from the interior such as the map on the wall in the background and the chair in the left foreground (as observed by E. Schavemaker).

  • used as model for
Gerard ter Borch (II), Twee musicerende vrouwen in een interieur
Ter Borch adopted the positioning of the figures with one figure as a repoussoir close to the picture plane in the left foreground, the type of interior with white-plastered walls, the depiction of a corner of the room and the red in the costume of the figure in the left foreground (Waiboer 2010, p. 57).

  • used as model for
De Man took over the positioning of the figures – mirrored – seated at a table; a male figure close to the beholder and a woman with a white cap on the other end of the table; the depiction of a corner of the room and generally the preference for showing objects from a certain angle resulting in a diagonal accent in the composition (as observed by A. Waiboer).

  • used as model for
Cornelis de Man, Mannen in een kantoor
De Man took over the positioning of the figures – mirrored – seated at a table, with a figure seen on the back close to the beholder and his body position with one arm akimbo (as observed by A. Waiboer).

  • used as model for
Ochtervelt repeated the setting, showing a corner of a room with light-plastered walls adorned with a map, the use of knee-length figures, the role division with a couple as the protagonists, globally the positioning of the two figures in relation to each other with the male figure seen from behind in the left foreground and the woman smiling to him, the lighting with light flooding the room from the left casting the figure of the man in strong relief and brightly lighting the woman (Kuretsky 1979, p. 80).
