    Ainsworth in Ainsworth/Waterman/Husband 2013, p. 267: 'The first to digits of the date […] appear to be original and are in good condition. The fragmentary second two digits (06) and the badly damaged monogram below the date are later additions, as is the decorative on the upper band of the bodice, which includes the letter A and D. The additions were all made in the same manner: a sharp, pointed instrument was first used to scratch deep into the surface of the original paint; a pale yellow or cream-colored paint was then carefully painted into the incisions, keeping the new paint in plane with the original.'

Mayer 1929; according to a translated transcript of a letter from M.J. Friedländer to Armand Lowengard (Duveen Brothers, Parijs), 9 March 1929: ‘I am convinced that it is a fine and particularly charming original by Durer’s hand, painted in Venice, where the Master settled in the year 1506. Apart from the monogram in the background, the Master has signed himself with the initials A-D in the embroidery in the strips on the breast, exactly as he did with the portrait of a lady in the Berliner Galerie, which Durer painted also in 1506 in Venice’, Los Angeles, The Getty Research Institute, Research Library, Special Collections and Visual Resources, Duveen Brothers records, 1876-1981 (bulk 1909-1964), Series II. Correspondence and papers. Series II.A. Files regarding works of art, box 238, folder 16 (1929-1930)
