De speldoos werd gebruikt voor schaken en voor dammen op 64 velden in de 16e eeuw. Zie bv: M. Corderius: De quotidiani sermonis locutione cum Flandrica et Gallica interpretatione, Antwerpiae 1552 ( U.B. Gent). A. Laet ons dammen. B. Wij en hebben gheen damberdt.
