    Het portret gaat uiteindelijk terug op een (verloren?) prototype van Peter Lely, waarop Willem III in heuplengte is weergegeven, en dat uit 1677 zou dateren. Naar dit prototype zijn vele herhalingen en deelkopieën geschilderd, o.a. door Willem Wissing.
