c. 1894-1895 (1894 - 1895)
The unique presence in this watercolor of both an underlying signature - which otherwise occurs (with one atypical exception; see cat. no. A133) in paintings dating to circa late 1891-early 1893 - and a superimposed equally rare and presumably early form of signature (see cat. nos. A21, A29, A32, the latter example being dated 1895) leads to the present dating of it to the years in which the artist was undergoing training in painting at the Rijksacademie, Amsterdam, or the year immediately thereafter. Since such training at the Academy concentrated upon representations of the human figure, this example provides strong evidence that by the early 1890s Mondrian already had begun to practice with considerable facility within that tradition of plein-air landscape art favored by the Hague school. Thus Irrigation Ditch with Goat may reflect in both subject matter and style not only the lessons in painting plein-air received in Winterswijk by his uncle Frits, but also the example of the latter's own mentor Willem Maris (Welsh/Joosten 1998)
