The authenticity of this painting has been doubted by Blok due to the 'P.M.' signature, which he rightly points out is totally unrepresentative for the artist's pre-1917 oeuvre. However, it might have been added in haste by the artist, before turning the painting over to the care of Mr. Slijper, who certainly never would have acquired it from another source without the signature plus a provenance leading back to Mondrian. In addition, the painting, even in its present poor condition, displays enough stylistic affinity with another early representation featuring trees (cat. no. A89) that one cannot consider it a true aberration, whatever one thinks of its standard of quality (Welsh/Joosten 1998).
