In the art-historical literature this painting is almost always regarded as an autograph Rembrandt. In 2006 Van de Wetering attributed the painting to someone from Rembrandt's circle (Kelch/Van de Wetering 2006, no. 75). However, he listed the painting as a Rembrandt (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 306).
