active; According to Schaeps, the print must have been made in the last year of MacArdell's life, as the painting was aquired by the owner recorded on the print, John Blackwood, in that year (Schaeps 2006, no. 43).

    Three earlier states of the print are known. The first state does not have the inscription yet (Charington 1923, no. 110 I). The second has the artist's names in scratched lettering (Fitzwilliam Museum, inv. no. P.5923-R). The third state is inscribed with 'Rembrandt pixit' and 'J. McArdell fecit', but misses the inscription about the collection of John Blackwood (British Museum, inv. no. 1919,0616.133).
