Since the 20th century this painting was always regarded as an autograph Rembrandt, until doubted by Gerson in 1969 (Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 389). In 1986 Tümpel regarded the painting as a work from Rembrandt's circle (Tümpel 1986, no. A 116). The Statens Museum for Kunst lists the painting as workshop of Rembrandt, possibly Willem Drost (website museum, accessed 2017-06-07).
