Current attribution
attributed to Rembrandt
With the exception of Waagen in 1854, this painting has always been considered an autograph Rembrandt until doubted by Gerson in 1969 (Waagen 1854, vol. 4, p. 150; Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 26). Since then the origin of the painting has generally been situated in the circle of Rembrandt (see for instance: Sumowski 1983-1994, vol. 2 (1983), no. 671; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 3 (1989), no. C 99). The painting is nowadays presented by the Museu de Arte de São Paulo as by 'Rembrandt (and workshop)' (website museum, accessed 2017-07-25).

Date
Exact or approximate dating of the described art work; the search parameters adopted for this art work in this database, are found in brackets.
c. 1634-1700 (1634 - 1700)
This painting is dated c. 1634-1635 by those who accept the attribution to Rembrandt (see for instance: Bardi 1982; website museum, accessed 2017-07-27). The members of the RRP, who rejected the attribution to Rembrandt, still regarded a date in the 17th century as "quite acceptable" (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 3 (1989), no. C 99).
