Pamela Fowler 2018: "The boy has removed his shoe, stocking and ribbon band from his left leg. Interestingly, in a photograph from the auction sales catalogue of October 20, 1982, the boy appears to have taken off his left shoe and ribbon band, but not the stocking on his leg. Four years later when this painting was seen again at auction, and after cleaning, the stocking had been removed. Clearly, and for reasons unknown, a former owner of the painting made the decision to cover the youngster's bare leg" (Fig 1/ A67)
