or attributed to Rembrandt
The work is part of a group of several heads of Christ in possession of different cultural institutions. There is no consensus about their attributions; some are attributed to Rembrandt and some to his followers (see De Witt/Ducos 2011; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 217). The version in Museum Bredius had been considered an autograph Rembrandt in art-historical literature without exception until the RRP expressed its doubts and recently argued it to be a free variant by a pupil of Rembrandt (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 217). Museum Bredius considers it to be an autograph Rembrandt, and it was also regarded as such in the exhibition Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus in 2011 (De Witt/Ducos 2011, no. 30).
Date
Exact or approximate dating of the described art work; the search parameters adopted for this art work in this database, are found in brackets.
c. 1648 (1648 - 1658)
The work has usually been dated to c. 1648 together with some of the other Christ heads, and dendrochronological research showed that this is indeed possible. Some of the other Christ figures are dated 1655 or later (De Witt/Ducos 2011, no. 30; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 217).
