    Some dark paint strokes placed under the cradle were thought to be remains of a signature (Van Thiel 1965, p. 159). However, according to the RRP these strokes were applied by the artist to indicate the joint between the floorboards (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 5 (2011), no. V 5).

This painting was always viewed as an autograph Rembrandt until doubted by Hamann in 1948. He suggested an attribution to Nicolaes Maes (Hamann 1948, p. 288, 290-291). Since then the painting is generally considered to be a work from the workshop of Rembrandt (Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 568; Dibbits 2006, p. 101-121; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 5 (2011), no. V 5).
