This painting was always viewed as an autograph Rembrandt until doubted by Wurzbach in 1910 (Von Wurzbach 1906-1911, vol. 2, p. 410). He regarded the painting as probably made by Carel Fabritius, an attribution which was followed by Van Dyke in 1923 (Van Dyke 1923, p. 81). However, for most authors the attribution of this painting to Rembrandt remained undisputed. In 1988 Giltaij questioned Rembrandt's authorship of the painting. He regarded the painting as made by a follower of Rembrandt (Jansen/Giltaij 1988, no. 26). In 2005 the painting was reattributed to Rembrandt by Wheelock (Wheelock 2005, p. 114). This attribution was rejected by Giltaij in 2009. In his essay he wrote that: "the painting must have been made in Rembrandt's studio". This attribution was based on the fact that the ground of the painting consisted of quartz, a medium only used in paintings by Rembrandt and his school (Giltaij 2009, p. 160).
