1850 - Waagen saw the painting in the collection of Henry Petty-FitzMaurice in 1850 (Waagen 1854, vol. 3, p. 164). In the auction catalogue of May 12, 1900 it is mentioned that the painting was in the collection of James Gray (Versailles) in 1863. Given the fact that Waagen already saw the painting in the collection of the Marquess of Landsdowne in 1850 this is not possible.

according to an annotation in a copy of the sale catalogue (RKD, The Hague) , Lugt no. 9098: “Par le Même [Rembrandt (Van Ryn)]. Un charmant Paysage, d’une vérité, d’une force d’effet et de couleur réellement admirables. On y voit un canal qui part du premier plan, et se prolonge vers la gauche : il est traversé par un pont, et bordé à droite et à gauche par des prairies et quelques chaumières entourées d’arbres. On remarque quelques bateliers dans leurs barques, et un charriot sur un chemin à gauche. Le peintre a disposé son principal foyer de lumière sur une chaumière et un bouquet d’arbres place au milieu, en plan reculé. Tout le reste du paysage est sacrifié dans une savant demi-teinte. Un ciel harmonieux et savamment dégradé, éclaire ce Tableau don’t la rareté et la perfection font un objet trèsmarquant, malgré sa petite dimension. Larg. 16 p., Haut. 11 p. B [29.7 x 43.2 cm].”

A stone bridge over a canal. The broad arch of a high bridge near an inn with a red gable, spans a canal which flows from the left towards the foreground. Beyond, a farm with a haystack among trees, and further on a church tower. Standing before the inn, a cart with passengers seen from behind ; on the road, a peasant driving a cow from left to right, and immediately in the foreground a second cow. Several other figures near the bridge. Under the bridge, and in front of it, a boat ; in the latter two boatmen, one of whom propels the boat with a pole. Dark sky, from which a bright ray of sunshine lights up in the group of trees, and the buildings among them. Painted almost entirely in tones of grey and brown. On panel - 11 1/2 in. by 16 in."
