Peter Paul Rubens, Venus voedt drie Cupido's
This engraving was always thought to be after an unknown painting by Rubens (Rooses 701) until the original drawing dated 1616 was discovered (Sotheby's New York, 26 January 2011, lot 585; now in an Antwerp private collection, RKD, no. 294909 ). The drawing is inscribed with a dedication by Rubens to the Antwerp senator Paulus van Halmale (c.1562-1648) and was probably intended to be included in his album amicorum. It was then subsequently engraved by Galle. A preparatory drawing by Galle (as study for his print) was sold in 1976 by Boerner, see RKD, no. 188113)
