Signature/inscription
Information about the signature, dating, inscription or any other mark on the front or back of the art work
  • signed and dated lower right: Rembrant.f [followed by three dots] 1631
According to the RRP the signature is quite unusual for 1631, but not for a somewhat later date. The spelling of the name without the 'd' can also be found in signatures on works from 1632 and 1633. The RRP concludes that Rembrandt most probably signed the painting after the poodle was added in 1633 and then correctly antedated it 1631 (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 1 (1982), no. A 40).
  • inscription on the back: J. Schamp 1810
Current attribution
Rembrandt
This painting has generally been accepted as a work by Rembrandt (see for instance: Bauch 1966, no. 301; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 1 (1982), no. A 40; Tümpel 1986, no. 160). Only Knuttel and Gerson expressed doubts about the attribution (Knuttel 1956, 249; Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 16).
