Dendrochronological analyses showed that the panel used for this painting came from the same tree as the one used for Rembrandt’s 'Portrait of Maurits Huygens' in the Hamburger Kunsthalle [RKD Images no. 32021] (Van de Wetering 1997, p. II and inside dustjacket).

    The signature is applied on and in the wet paint. The unusual spelling of the name without the 'd' appears in a small group of painitngs by Rembrandt made between 1632 and 1633 (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 4 (2005), no. IV addendum 1).
Current attribution
When this painting was discovered in the 1970s, the RRP believed that it was not an autograph Rembrandt. After reassessing the painting Van de Wetering attributed it to Rembrandt (Van de Wetering 1997, p. II and inside dustjacket; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 4 (2005), no. IV addendum 1).
