According to Langedijk the painting was originally smaller. She suggested that the painting was enlarged to fit in the De'Medici gallery of Self Portraits (Langedijk 1992, p. 148-152). However, the RRP proposes that the painting was originally larger. According to them strips of possibly 15 cm wide were removed from all sides of the painting (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 4 (2005), no. IV 28).
