The painting has been painted on top of another painting depicting a woman (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 3 (1989), no. C 96; Ingamells 1985-1992, vol. 4 (1992), p. 287-289).

This painting was always regarded as an autograph Rembrandt until doubted by Gerson in 1968 (Gerson 1968, no. 237). In 1986 Tümpel listed the painting as studio of Rembrandt, which attribution was followed by the RRP (Tümpel 1986, no. A 68; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 3 (1989), no. C 96). In 2005/2006 the painting was reattributed to Rembrandt (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 4 (2005), p. 238-242; Brown 2006A, p. 60-61).
