Object information
Object category
panel (poplar), oil paint
rectangle (portrait format) 107,5 x 82,2 cm
Given the fact that the sketch of the painting shows a larger painted surface the members of the RRP posited the idea that the painting was reduced on all sides. It is not known whether this alteration was contemporaneous or that it was a later intervention (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 3 (1989), no. A 131).
Information about the signature, dating, inscription or any other mark on the front or back of the art work
  • with signature and date lower left: Rembrandt f / 1639
According to the RRP the signature and date are probably copied after an original and not authentic (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 3 (1989), no. A 131).
Current attribution
in the latest volume of the Corpus a collaboration between Rembrandt and a member of his workshop is suggested (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 6 (2015), no. 184b)
Exact or approximate dating of the described art work; the search parameters adopted for this art work in this database, are found in brackets.
c. 1639 (1638 - 1640)
Although signature and date are probably not authentic, a date around 1639 for the production of this painting seems plausible (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 3 (1989), no. A 131).
