The painting was in all probability originally oval. Presumably during the first half of the 19th century the panel was reduced to a 12-sided panel. After that small blocks of wood were added to create a rectangular shape (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 103).
