After the death of Haesje van Cleyburch and her husband Dirk Jansz. Pesser the painting probably remained in the family by inheritance. Eventually the painting came into the possession of the Van Gersdorff family through the marriage of Wolfgang Abraham van Gersdorff and Anna van der Linden, the great-granddaughter of Haesje (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 103; information from Jonathan Bikker, research curator at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, 2014).
- 1783 On the back of the painting there is a wax seal with the coat-of-arms of the van Gersdorff family as used by Salomon Johan van Gersdorff in 1783 (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 103).
