Signature/inscription
Information about the signature, dating, inscription or any other mark on the front or back of the art work
  • signed and dated center right: Rembrandt / f. 1654
  • remnants of signature upper left: Rembrandt f
According to Von Sonnenburg, this signature is on a worn paint layer and thus could not belong to the original state of either the discarded or the final painting. He suggests that it was added when the original signature could no longer be read. According to the Rembrandt Research Project the upper left signature cracked along with the paint layer on which it was applied and is just as worn as this layer. Consequently, the RRP does not believe that the signature was added later (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 4, no. IV 9).
Current attribution
attributed to Rembrandt
Strong doubts as to Rembrandt's authorship of the present painting have been voiced in the recent Rembrandt literature. This issue is seriously complicated by the painting's turbulent material history (Corpus of Rembrandt paintings 1982-, vol. 4 (2005), no. IV 9). In de last volume of the Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings the painting is recorded as by Rembrandt (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 6 (2015), no. 235a).
