De signatuur was bedekt door een valse Rembrandt signatuur die bij een restauratie in 1925 werd verwijderd. Indien het schilderij inderdaad identiek is met die in de Pommersfelden en Hardy veilingen is deze valse signatuur ergens tussen 1878 en 1925 op het schilderij aangebracht.

: Beschrijving: zwarte baret op lang, rossig haar, snor en vliegje. Zwarte mantel met gespen over lichtbruinig tuniek en witte, los omgeslagen halsdoek. Door MacLaren en Von Moltke werd het schilderij als Portret van Rembrandt beschouwd, conform vermelding in eerdere veilingen. De identificatie als Zelfportret van Flinck werd gedaan door De Bruyn Kops in 1965 op basis van vergelijking met een portretgravure van Blootheling en het zelfportret op het schutterstuk van 1648 in het Amsterdam Museum.
