: In 1913 Schmidt-Degener identified the sitter of the portrait with Titia van Uylenburch and the pendant portrait with Francois Coopal (Schmidt-Degener 1913, p. 1-11). After cleaning the picture an inscription recording the sitter's age appeared, excluding Titia as the possible portrayed person (Van Gelder 1953, p. 38). In 1958 Van Eeghen identified the woman on the portrait with Agatha Bas and the pendant portrait with Nicolaes van Bambeeck, whose ages corresponds to the ones inscribed on the pictures (Van Eeghen 1958A). This identification has been accepted ever since (White/De Sancha 2015, no. 162, p. 318).

According to White the painting was sold by John Smith to lord Charles Townshend (White 1982, no. 162, p. 107-108). A copy of the 1814 auction catalogue at the the RKD (next to lot no. 76) bears the annotation "This picture was sold by the writer to Lord Charles Townsend for 1000 gs. in his Lordships sale in 1818 it was knocked down to Lord Yarmouth for the king at 720 gs. J.S.".
