According to the RRP the writing and location of the signature differ from Rembrandt's general manner. The spelling of the name without the 'd' occurs in some authentic paintings between of 1633 and 1634 (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. C 65 and no. C 66). According to Van de Wetering this signature was probably copied after the one on the companion piece (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 77b).

This painting was always regarded as an authentic Rembrandt until doubted by Tümpel and the RRP in 1986. They attributed this painting to Rembrandt's studio (Tümpel 1986, no. A 119; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. C 66). In 2004 it was suggested that this painting was made by Rembrandt with the help of a pupil (Hedley/Duffy 2004, p. 349). This attribution has since then been generally accepted, although there is no consensus of opinion on the extent of the studio assistance (Brown 2006A, p. 58-60; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 77b).

La dame est vêtue d’une robe de soie noire, don’t le corsage est orné d’une broderie en or, sur la tête elle porte un petit bonnet en dentelle et autour du cou une large fraise blanche. La robe de la jeune fille est d’une belle étoffe à fleurs. Ce portrait réunit les hautes et superbes qualités du precedent. Ces deux chefs-d’oeuvre proviennent de la succession de feu Mr. Valckenier van de Poll, à Amsterdam."
