The inventory drawn up on 16 March 1636, on the occasion of Susannah Ruts second marriage to Pieter van der Haagen, includes: “t contrefeytsel van Nicolaes Ruts by Rembrant gedaen” (Hofstede de Groot 1906 A en Strauss/Van der Meulen 1979). In the inventory drawn up on 3 March 1649, after the death of Susannah Ruts, the painting was included as: “een conterfeyt schilderije van den ouden Nicolaes Rutz in een swartte lijst” (Van Eeghen 1977). Susannah Ruts died in the house of her daughter from her first marriage, Catharina Boddens, who had been married to Johannes Romswinckel from Lisse since 1644. By descent the painting remained in the family Romswinckel.

1799 - 1817 By descent the painting came in the collection of the Romswinckel family. According to a caption on a watercolor after the painting by Abraham Delfos, it was owned by Joost Romswinckel in Leiden in 1799 (Hofstede de Groot 1906 A). According to Moes, the painting was still in the collection of J. Romswinckel in The Hague in 1817 (Moes 1897). In 1823 the painting was offered for sale as part of the collection of Anthony Meynts. While it is generally assumed that Meynts had bought the painting sometime between 1817 and 1823, a letter discusses the painting being offered to the Rijksmuseum in 1831 by the Romswinckel heirs. In addition, in 1843 the portrait is listed in a catalogue of Willem II's collection as having been acquired directly from the Romswinckel family (Bailey/Iacono 2011, p. 33).

Research and restoration projects

The Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies at the Harvard Art Museums houses the Alan Burroughs Collection of X-Radiographs, the ﬁrst systematic, large-scale X-ray documentation project assembled to address issues of the authenticity and attribution of paintings. Many of the X-rays were produced between 1925 and 1944 by Burroughs—a Harvard graduate (1920) who became a Fogg Museum research fellow and the keeper of X-ray "shadowgraphs". Today the collection contains approximately 8,000 X-radiographs of over 4,450 paintings from the great collections of America and Europe.

The study focused mainly on grounds, and to some extent on paint layers. Samples were taken of 75 panel and canvas paintings attributed to Rembrandt.
Prof. Dr. Hermann Kühn took the samples at the painting's institution with a stereomicroscope after which he analyzed them at the Doerner Institut in Munich.
