: The identification of the sitter is uncertain. A couple of suggestions have been made. In the earlier literature the sitter was considered to be Jan Six (Waagen 1854, vol. 2, p. 335; London 1899, no. 38). In the exhibition catalogue of 1932 Schmidt-Degener proposed that Rembrandt had portrayed Clement de Jonghe on this painting (Amsterdam 1932 (Rembrandt), no. 25). In 1987 Voûte suggested an identification with Pieter Six (Voûte 1987, p. 26-27), a suggestion that had earlier been made by Schwartz. However, Schwartz preferred an identification with Jan van de Cappelle (Schwartz 1984, p. 259, 372). In the latest volume of the Corpus of Rembrandt paintings it is stated that "so far no convincing identification of the man portrayed ..... has been proposed." (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 225).
