Physical connection
Reference in ‘composite artworks’: artworks that are/were connected, such as alterpieces, decorative pieces incorporated in panelling, and works of art that were intended to be displayed together, such as pendants and series.

pendant

After restoration in 1965 it was found that the painting of the Musée Jacquemart-André has the same painted decorative frame as Gerard van Honthorst's portrait of Frederik Hendrik of Orange. Since then both paintings are considered to be pendants (Gerson 1969, p. 244-249). At some point in time Rembrandt's portrait of Amalia was replaced by a portrait painted by Honthorst [RKDImages no. 166622] (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 61).
