c. 1665 (1665 - 1669)
In the art-historical literature this painting is dated variously, but always in the second half of the 1660s (with the exception of Schwartz who dates it 1663-1668 (Schwartz 1984, ill. 402)). In the earlier literature most authors date it around 1668 (see for instance: Van Schendel 1956, no. 100; Klessmann 1983, p. 169). Since 1991 the painting is often dated c. 1665 (Brown/Kelch/ Van Thiel 1991, p. 19; Bikker/Schapelhouman/Krekeler 2014, online supplement p. 20; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 313).
