Rejected attribution
circle of Rembrandt
In 1960 Bauch rejected the attribution to Rembrandt (Bauch 1960, p. 261, note 130). The RRP stated that the painting originated from Rembrandt's immediate circle. However, it was also mentioned that Van de Wetering did "not rule out the possibility of no. C 22 being an autograph work by Rembrandt." (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 1 (1982), no. C 22). Since then many art historians have argued in favor of an attribution to Rembrandt (see for instance: MacTavish 1984, no. 8; Schatborn 1986, p. 59; Woollett et al. 1995, no. 13; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 4 (2005), p. 628); Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 44. However, not all art historians are convinced of an attribution to Rembrandt (see for instance: Tümpel 1986, no. 128*; not included by Slatkes 1992; Van Straten/Moerman 2005, p. 189-190).
