Rembrandt
In art-historical literature, the painting has mostly been regarded as a work by Rembrandt, and occasionally even as a self portrait by the artist (see for example Hofstede de Groot, vol. 6 (1914), no. 577). Tümpel attributed the painting to the workshop of Rembrandt (Tümpel 1986, no. A31). The members of the RRP are of the opinion that both the first and present state of the painting are by the master’s hand, and the Toledo Museum of Art attributes the work to Rembrandt too (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 1 (1982), no. A41, vol. 6 (2015), no. 57).
Date
Exact or approximate dating of the described art work; the search parameters adopted for this art work in this database, are found in brackets.
dated 1631 (1631 - 1635)
The painting is monogrammed and dated 1631, but has been almost completely repainted. The X-ray of the painting shows its earlier state, as does a copy probably made in Rembrandt’s workshop. It has been suggested that the present state was completed in the mid-1630s. This remains a possibility, as the monogram and date of 1631 are located in a place were no alterations have been made (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 1 (1982), no. A 41, vol. 6 (2015), no. 57).

    Rembrandt
    formerly in the Gates Collection

Copy after the first version of the painting before it was almost entirely repainted. Probably made by an anonymous pupil of Rembrandt. See volumes 2 and 6 of the Corpus for a reproduction (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), p. 847; vol. 6 (2015), no. 57).

Technical documentation
The RKD manages a collection of technical documentation that has been given to us by external researchers and museums or which stems from the RKD's own research with infrared reflectography. Documentation can be accessed by appointment at the RKD. While not all technical documentation has been entered in the database at present, new data is added on a regular basis.
