: In the art-historical literature there has been some discussion about the identity of the model. Some scholars posited the idea that Rembrandt depicted his first wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh (see for instance: Bauch 1966, no. 455). Others proposed that the woman on the painting is Lijsbeth van Rijn, Rembrandt's sister (see for instance: Bode 1883, p. 417, 605, no. 364; Bredius 1935, no. 85). In 1956 Wijnman suggested that Maria van Eyck, wife of Hendrick van Uylenburgh, was the sitter for the painting (Wijnman 1956, p. 101). Nowadays the painting is generally considered to be a tronie (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 49; Cavalli-Björkman/Fryns/Sidén 2005, no. 415; Rønberg/Pedersen/Van de Wetering 2006, no. 6).
