Support/medium
canvas on panel, oil paint
In the auction catalogue of 1793 this painting is already described as being on panel. Thus, the mounting of the canvas on panel must have been done before that date. According to the RRP the canvas used for this painting probably comes from the same bolt as the one used for the 'Portrait of a couple in an interior' of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston which is attributed to Rembrandt or to someone from his studio [RKD Images no. 35495] (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 4 (2005), p. p. 629-635).
Shape/dimensions
upright oval 68,7 x 53,5 cm
As can be deduced from the incomplete signature, the canvas has been trimmed. Given the description in the auction catalogue of 1793 this must have been done before that date. According to the RRP the painting was probably 10 to 20 cm larger on the side and upper edges and originaly rectangular (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 4 (2005), p. 629-635).
Signature/inscription
Information about the signature, dating, inscription or any other mark on the front or back of the art work
  • remnants of signature and date lower right: RHL (in monogram). van R[...] / 163[2?]
Because the painting was trimmed, the signature and date are incomplete. It is generally believed that the last digit of the date was a 2 (see for instance: Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. C 61; auction catalogue Sotheby's London, 2007-01-25, no. 6).
Current attribution
attributed to Rembrandt
or circle of Rembrandt
This painting was always regarded as an autograph Rembrandt until doubted by the RRP in 1986. They believed that the painting was made by someone outside Rembrandt's immediate circle (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. C 61). After reassessing the painting in 1995 Van de Wetering reattributed the painting to Rembrandt (Gros Becker 1996, p. 28-32). Since then, this attribution has generally been accepted (see for instance: Giltaij 2003, no. 13; Korevaar/Vogelaar/Janssen 2005, no. 71).
