The painting was always considered an autograph Rembrandt until doubted by the members of the Rembrandt Research Project. According to them the work must have been painted in Rembrandt's immediate circle (Corpus of Rembrandt Paitings 1982-2015, vol. 3 (1989), no. C 84). This view was then not shared by all other authors and in the last volume of the Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings Ernst van de Wetering reattributed the painting to Rembrandt (Corpus of Rembrandt Paitings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 188).
