In 1925 Hofstede de Groot mentioned that the new owner of the painting, R. Langton Douglas, who bought the painting 26 June 1925 at Christie’s, removed some additions at the upper and underside of the panel. Before this alteration the painting was 37 cm tall. In 1745 the painting already measured 37 cm. In that year the painting was listed in the sale catalogue of Gersaint as no. 65 together with another painting with the same measurements from the circle of Rembrandt, 'Travellers resting' currently in the collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague. It has been assumed that these additions were carried out by Rembrandt himself, but this hypothesis was disputed by Slive in 1964.
